On 12 February 2008 ABC News reported “Judge bans Underbelly”.

Controversial crime drama Underbelly has been banned from airing in Victoria until after the trial of a man accused of murdering a gangland figure, who cannot be named.

The Supreme Court issued the suppression order today on the grounds of prejudice.

The series was due to premiere on Channel Nine tomorrow night, but its debut has been put off in the state indefinitely.

Justice Betty King has also ordered the removal of all excerpts from Underbelly from the internet.

But John Sylvester, author of the Underbelly book series, says that decision may not be very effective.

"I guarantee you will be able to watch it for free from midnight on the internet," he told Fairfax News.

"The web changes the rules totally.

"I don't know where they want to go from here, but if Victorians want to see it they will."

A Channel Nine spokesperson says the network is considering their options.

"As always, will not be commenting on legal issues," the spokesperson added.
