12 November 2007 The Australian / AAP reported “Police probe claims second scalp”.

It said that Victoria Police media director Stephen Linnell, who is answering corruption allegations at an independent inquiry, has resigned. The resignation comes after disgraced assistant commissioner Noel Ashby, , widely tipped as a future chief commissioner, was forced to resign on Friday after two days of damning testimony in the witness box in which he admitted he had leaked information to Sergeant Mullett. Mr Ashby also admitted to having not told the truth at a previous closed OPI hearing, in which he said he had not been given details of a top secret corruption investigation into the alleged involvement of a police detective in an underworld murder.

The hearing has been told that information about the probe into the 2003 murder of male prostitute Shane Chartres-Abbott, codenamed Operation Briars, was leaked to Sergeant Mullett. It was allegedly then passed by police union president Inspector Brian Rix to the target of the investigation, Detective Sergeant Peter Lalor, who was also a union delegate.
