On 25 January 2008 The Boston Globe / AP reported “City spends heavily to fight suit by wrongfully convicted man”.

It said the city of Boston has spent $1.1 million to fight a suit by a wrongfully convicted man who spent 15 years in prison. Shawn Drumgold was convicted of first-degree murder in 1989 in the death of 12-year-old Darlene Tiffany Moore, who was killed by a stray bullet on a Roxbury street corner. Drumgold was freed in 2003 after several prosecution witnesses told The Boston Globe they'd been bullied by police into testifying.

But while prosecutors said Drumgold was wrongly convicted, they never said he was innocent and a lawyer for the city told the Globe that Drumgold received a fair trial. The civil rights suit is scheduled to go to trial next month. Drumgold's lawyer said the city is wasting tax dollars while refusing to acknowledge they prosecuted an innocent man.
