On 7 June 2008 The Advertiser reported “Professor, university manager suspended”.

It said investigations continue but no charges have been laid following allegations of financial fraud at Adelaide’s most prestigious university. The University of Adelaide has indefinitely suspended with pay Professor Maciej Henneberg, head of anatomical sciences and the laboratory manager in his division, John Cecchin.

Mr Cecchin is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating $400,000. It is under stood the university became aware of the issue several months ago. Professor Henneberg did not return calls yesterday. His scientist wife Renata, also employed at the university, is working in Italy. A source close to the professor said he and Mr Cecchin - who is believed to be interstate — had not had any contact since being suspended.

The source said Professor Henneberg denied any deliberate wrong-doing. It is understood he has requested he continue advising his students so their work is not affected by his suspension.
