South Australia homepage Sandra Kanck SA Democrats - Media ReleaseMember of the Legislative Council of South Australia Friday 22 June 2007 ICACC BILL FOR BIKIES and BUREAUCRATSDemocrats MP Sandra Kanck has announced her intention to introduce a bill to parliament for the establishment of an Independent Commission against Crime and Corruption. “There is the obvious threat of bikies and organized crime. ‘But lobbyists trying to turn a deal for big property developers and mining projects can also be a threat to our democracy. ‘WA, NSW and Queensland have independent watchdogs and they have regularly turned up examples of corruption in high places. ‘That’s why DPP Steve Pallaras has joined the long list of people calling for an ICACC. ‘The Liberals say they support an ICACC and yet curiously refuse to introduce their own bill. This is a case of put up or shut up. The Australian Democrats introduced a bill for an Independent Commission against Crime and Corruption 1988 and again in 2005. ‘By putting it before parliament again we will be forcing all MPs to take a stand or be condemned in the eyes of the community,” said Ms Kanck.
