UK specialist on MSBP - Professor Sir Roy Meadow

Specialising in the condition known as Munchausen's Sydrome by Proxy, Professor Meadow gave evidence in the case of Sally Clark in the UK. His evidence was found to be unreliable and has resulted in him being struck off the medical register in the UK. In a High Court appeal that decision was reversed. The High Court decision has now been taken to the Court of Criminal Appeal. It will have far reaching implications for expert witnesses giving evidence in court. Are they amenable to action by their professional conduct body where it is alleged that their conduct or evidence was not of an appropriate standard?

Legal Cases

26 October 2006 - Court of Appeal judgment
On the facts of this case, Professor Meadow was found to be not guilty of unprofessional conduct (dissenting judgment by Sir Anthony Clarke MR)
Other views expressed in the High Court appeal were overturned

17 Feb 2006 - Professor Sir Roy Meadow v General Medical Council - UK High Court
The court overturned the decision of the Fitness to Practise Panel

15 Jul 2005 - Fitness to Practice Panel - Professor Sir Roy Meadow

The Fitness to Practise Panel has jurisdiction to inquire into the quality of expert evidence given in Court
The Panel was concerned with a charge against Professor Sir Roy Meadow, a consultant paediatrician, in relation to expert evidence given in his police statement to the Cheshire Constabulary in June 1998. This evidence was used again at the committal proceedings at Chester Magistrates Court in May 1999, followed by the Crown Court trial of Sally Clark in October 1999 for the murder of her two children. Her conviction was quashed on 29 January 2003 by the Court of Appeal. His name was erased from Medical Register.
