ABC News Online has reported that the Victorian Supreme Court has been asked to review whether a man hanged for murder 84 years ago should be pardoned. It states that in 1922, Melbourne bar owner Colin Ross was found guilty of the rape and murder of 12-year-old Alma Tritscke, whose body was found in Gunn Alley, off Little Collins Street.

Ross was sentenced to death after two failed appeals against his conviction. It seems that new forensic tests on hair samples found at Ross's home show the crown case against him was flawed.

The ABC reports that Victorian Attorney-General Rob Hulls has asked the Supreme Court to consider a petition of mercy. "It's interesting that this petition has actually been signed by the family of both the victim and the condemned man," he said. The court will advise the State Government on whether Ross should be pardoned.
